In the UK, we are extremely lucky to have access to excellent medical care. The service provided by the NHS is of the highest standard, but mistakes can happen, and when they do, we are privileged to support those whose lives have been impacted.

We have represented those left with physical and emotional scars after being subjected to unnecessary procedures and operations; those who have been left with severe pain and life-long injuries as a result of surgical mesh implants, as well as families whose futures have been changed forever because of birth injuries or fatalities.

We are there for those who have suffered as a result of medical negligence, but where appropriate we also campaign to force medical providers to put patient safety ahead of profits.

We are not just another law firm. Since 1921, we have only ever represented the injured and mistreated, never defendants or insurance companies. We have been involved in key medical negligence cases and have campaigned for change, justice, and fairness for the injured from the outset.

Say No To Mesh

We have a team of lawyers who are specialists in mesh litigation; they are currently acting on behalf of more than 400 women, men and children who have suffered life-changing injuries as a result of vaginal and rectal surgical mesh implants.

We believe mesh may be the biggest medical scandal since thalidomide, and we are committed to fighting for our clients and campaigning to bring an end to the use of all mesh in the UK.

Justice for Victims of Ian Paterson

In 2017, we acted on behalf of 650 former patients of breast surgeon, Ian Paterson, after they were subjected to unnecessary surgical techniques and operations.

A £37 million compensation package was approved by the High Court and Paterson, who was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison for multiple counts of wounding with intent, had his sentence increased to 20 years.

A new fund was set up in 2021 to support thousands more potential victims of the disgraced surgeon. In 2023, Spire again announced a further 1,500 patients were sent recall letters after it reviewed historic IT systems containing patient information from more than 20 years ago. 

Patient safety in private healthcare

Our work on the Ian Paterson case shone a spotlight on ways in which private healthcare providers are trying to avoid taking responsibility for problems that emerge from negligent medical treatment.

Private healthcare providers need to take greater responsibility for the care of patients who receive treatment at their facilities, and our fight to ensure they do so continues.

Private healthcare companies need to be held to the same standards and obligations of transparency, safety and accountability as the NHS.

Habib Rahman Patient Recall

We are representing more than 30 ex-patients of Habib Rahman after they underwent unnecessary or inappropriate shoulder manipulation surgeries.

Hundreds of patients were recalled by Spire Healthcare in January 2020 following concerns about the consultant orthopaedic surgeon who was operating at Spire Parkway Hospital in the West Midlands - the same private hospital as Ian Paterson.

Michael Walsh: Unnecessary Procedures

We are currently representing a dozen clients who underwent unnecessary or inappropriate shoulder surgery with consultant surgeon, Michael Walsh, at Spire Leeds Hospital - the same private healthcare provider as Ian Paterson and Mr Habib Rahman.

Michael Walsh was suspended from practice in April 2018 and remains under investigation by the General Medical Council (GMC).
